Considering Braces? Here’s What to Expect

Whether you’re in middle school or middle-aged, getting braces for the first time may come with questions and a lot of uncertainty. At Meyer Orthodontics in Brookings, we tell you what to expect each step of the braces journey.

Beginning the Journey

When considering braces for yourself or your child, we’ll start by scheduling a consultation. This’ll take about an hour, and we’ll spend the time getting to know you and your dental history and showing you around the office. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss financing options.

We will then take some photos and x-rays so we can diagnose which treatment plan is best for you. There is no charge for this initial consultation.

Once we decide the best option moving forward, we will provide you with an approximate cost of treatment and a timeline. Then, if you are ready, we can go ahead and schedule an appointment to get your braces on!

Getting Your Braces

It’s time to transform your smile! The first appointment requires 1-1.5 hours to place your braces. We will also spend time reviewing instructions for care and cleaning and do’s and don’t’s, such as brushing and flossing.

One of our trained Orthodontic Assistants will carefully prep your teeth for brackets, and then Dr. Meyer will position a bracket on each tooth. We then connect the braces with a light wire, which is tied to the braces to begin alignment of your teeth.

The wire starts out straight, but will be crooked when we attach it to your teeth. As it pulls itself back into its straight shape, it’ll pull and straighten your teeth along with it too. We put a lot of detail and care into this process in order to achieve the best results.

Will it hurt?

You may experience some discomfort when getting your braces on and after tightening, but it’s nothing that ibuprofen or Tylenol can’t take care of!

Continuing Treatment

Once your smile is on it’s way to perfection, you’ll come in every 6-8 weeks to tighten and adjust your braces. These appointments typically take 20-30 minutes. We’ll check progress, answer questions, and maybe even give you some new colored elastics to make things fun.

We will continue these appointments until it’s time to remove your braces, depending on your unique smile and length of treatment.
