Your Bite Matters: Why Braces Aren’t Just About Straight Teeth

Braces help develop a proper bite.As long as your front few teeth are straight, there’s no need to consider braces – right?

Wrong.

In fact, orthodontics are about a lot more than just the cosmetic flair of having a great smile.

The real goal of orthodontic care is to create a healthy bite so you can chew efficiently and have overall better oral health.

Getting straight teeth from the process is just a wonderful side effect!

So What If My Bite’s Not Right?

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists compare our teeth to gears. When gears don’t fit together correctly, they can’t perform their function. Similarly, when our upper and lower teeth don’t fit together quite right, our bite is off.

While it might not seem like a big deal, having improper bite or jaw alignment can create other potential problems, such as wear of teeth or chipping, breathing issues, jaw joint problems, and a higher risk of cavities.

Achieving a Healthy Bite

Your board-certified orthodontist will achieve a healthy bite by repositioning your teeth within the jaw bones, ensuring they “line up” correctly for efficient biting and chewing.

When your front teeth are already straight, it’s not always easy to spot these common bite-alignment issues:

  • An underbite (or anterior crossbite) – when the top teeth are positioned behind the bottom teeth
  • An open bite – when the back teeth are closed, but the front teeth don’t meet, or when the front teeth meet, but the back teeth don’t touch
  • A deep bite – when top teeth completely cover the bottom teeth
  • A crossbite – when the bottom teeth are outside of the top teeth
